Iceberg to be towed to UAE

阿联酋拟从南极拖冰山

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the most aridcountries in the world and will face a severe shortage of water resources over the next 25 years. Abdulla Alshehi, an inventor and entrepreneur from the UAE, made an ambitious plan to drag anicebergto the UAE.

阿联酋是世界上最干旱的国家之一,未来25年将面临严重的水资源短缺问题。阿联酋发明家兼企业家阿卜杜拉?阿尔谢希为此制订了一个雄心勃勃的拖冰山计划。

His staff will select the iceberg for use from Heard Island, near Antarctica, via satellite, before using a boat to drag it to the Fujairah coast. Upon arrival at a specially constructed processing facility, workers will “mine” the iceberg for their water supplies.

Blocks of ice will be chipped off and placed in giant tanks, before being filtered and processed. It is expected to lose around 30% of its mass during its 10-month journey and the final project will cost between $100 million and $150 million.
